Bad Madam has worked for Somerset House for over three years producing culturally-led content for numerous shows and exhibitions. For the last two years, we’ve been asked to script and direct their winter Skate films to promote the opening of the ice rink and tell the story of what it takes to create a ‘Somerset House Christmas’.
We took a documentary-style approach and created a series of mini-docs to promote different elements. Featuring the artists involved, we produced a short film about musician Anna Meredith and the track she made using the sounds of the Zamboni that grooms the ice rink, and a second film about the DJs playing at Skate Lates. We also directed a hero experience film, featuring all elements of the Winter Skate programme, but showcasing the rink in its full glory using drones and crane rigs positioned on the roof of Somerset House to capture the spectacular Christmas scene.
The launch of the film series resulted in record advance ticket sales for Somerset House Skate, with the December skate sessions sold out by October and Skate Lates sessions also fully booked. The films featured within a number of ‘Best London Ice Rinks’ articles, resulting in increased awareness of the rink compared to the previous year.
